Although Eric Clapton is well known for his use of the pentatonic minor box shapes - a more sophisticated modern rock sound can be obtained by putting the major second (2) and the minor sixth (b6) back into the patterns.
This reintroduction of the 2nd and b6th produces the
NATURAL MINOR SCALE
(Formula 1, 2, b3, 4, 5, b6, b7)
also known as
the AEOLIAN MODE.
Unlike the pentatonic minor scale the natural minor has the semi-tone (half-step) interval which allows half-step bends - rather like the blues scale with the addition of its flattened fifth interval.
