Al Di Meola's guitar technique

Al Di Meola's technique includes the following defining characteristics:-

1. Uses a pick/plectrum for both lead and rhythm work.

2. Plays using all FOUR fingers of the left hand - unlike many self-taught players who use the first three fingers only (omitting the pinky).

3. Picks/strums from the wrist and NOT the forearm for exceptional speed and clarity.

4. Positions the guitar for maximum playability and NOT as some type of fashion statement.

All said a top man.

In 1991 Al Di Meola produced an excellent VHS tuition video tape in association with REH Publications Inc. The tape explains Di Meola's approach to picking and helped me to eradicate the bad habits I had developed prior to watching the video.

Parts of the video have been uploaded by others to YouTube but it is worth seeking out a full copy of the video if you are serious about your technique.

A natural minor scale box shapes

The grandma of all scales is the NATURAL MINOR SCALE (with the major scale being grandpa which was explored in BLOGoZON No.24 in its standard five box shape forms and BLOGoZON No.10 examined the seven three notes per string shapes).

BLOGoZON No.20 detailed the seven three notes per string shapes of the A natural minor scale and in this BLOGoZON the five standard box shapes are detailed.

AGEDC octaves A natural minor note names

As always a more long term solution to fretboard navigation is to see scales/arpeggios as INTERVAL shapes rather than note names - as these are universal to all scales, arpeggios and chords rather than specific to one particular root note - with this in mind the intervals for the A natural minor scale are detailed below for the
6-string guitar in the AGEDC octaves manner:-

The table and tabbed panel below details all five box shapes for the A natural minor scale for the 6-string guitar in the AGEDC octaves style.
